Mayo Mental Health Services

The Mayo Mental Health Service is a community based mental health service with five Sector Teams and four Specialist Teams.

Many people with mental health difficulties are supported by their local GP, however in each geographic area there is also a designated Community Mental Health Multidisciplinary Team that responds to the specialist mental health needs of its population.  Referral to the Community Mental Health Team is through the GP or via the Accident and Emergency Department if community mental health services are deemed appropriate.

There are four specialist teams in Castlebar and Ballina, including North and South Psychiatry of Old Age.  The Rehabilitation and Recovery Team is situated beside An Coillin Unit, St Mary’s Campus, on the Westport Road.  Also the Mental Health and Intellectual Disability Team is based in the Primary Care service in Castlebar.

Each Community Mental Health Team is led by a Consultant Psychiatrist and has a multi-disciplinary team comprised of professionals from disciplines such as Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Clinical Psychology, Social Workers, Addiction Counsellors, Cognitive Behavioural Therapists and Peer Support Workers.

The overall management of the Mayo Mental Health service is under the Area Management Team which comprises of the heads of the different disciplines, the Executive Clinical Director, Head of Service, the business manager for CHO2, the Area lead for mental health engagement and an administrator.
