What is Family Recovery?
Family recovery is about all members of the family living the life they want to.
Aside from the challenges individual family members face with mental health difficulties or other challenges each has a right and responsibility to live their own life. It is natural when a family member is unwell for family members to rally around and assist them.
Family recovery can help family members to focus on their own needs and give them the opportunity to process their emotions and build their own resilience so that the support they provide allows the family member with mental health difficulties the room to develop and grow into the person they choose to be. Ongoing mental health difficulties can impact every member of the family in different ways. We know from evidence reaching out and getting support from others in a similar situation can help with family recovery. This is the essence of family peer support. This is why in Bealach Nua we also provide opportunities for family members to network and meet other families in a similar situation this is why family peer support is so important.
